Grand Canyon Dusk -process

2' x 4' Oil on canvas
in process

It's coming along..
Trying to get the right side foreground next,
and juggle the deepest shadow colors
with some glazing...
And it's too tempting to start fantasizing images
on top of the point: the wrapped Indian in a blanket ,
or maybe some Warrior yoga posture.
And then there's the juxtaposition icon:
a shopping cart.

Cross-legged study

6" x 6" Oil on masonite

Floating

6" x 6" Oil on masonite

$195. + S/H SOLD

Now this is what we call loose painting.
Would that all my figures (and landscapes)
be produced with enough accuracy
yet this much freedom of the brush.
It was fun to do that's for sure.

Grand Canyon Process

Detail

2' x 4' in process

I'm hoping to get through this in the next couple of weeks.
It's like putting a puzzle together. It feels great as areas
and colors click together. And while I'm doing it, I'm
already thinking of another Canyon painting. It's
such a great place, and painting there is the ultimate
plein air experience.

Bulldog Spring

12" x 12" Oil on canvas

This is larger view of yesterday's post
that were done the same day.
The light from sunrise behind the mountain
continued to brighten everything, and the
strong shadow of the mountain receded by
late morning

Bulldog Canyon

6" x 6" Oil on masoniteWorking plein air today at Bulldog Canyon
was magical. The California Poppies popped open
as the sun warmed them up around 9 am, making
the fields glow. The mountain ridge is called Goldfield Mts
for reasons other than gold perhaps??

Surrey Hills

11" x 14" Oil on canvas on wood board
This has a ways to go, it's easy to see reviewing the photo.
That's why I take photos while I'm painting. You never know
if it will be complete on site or not. Turns out I rarely go back
into mine, but it would help in many cases!

We had a nice turnout on Wednesday with
Toni Perrin, Phil Koerper, Rodney Cobb,
Diane Scholar, Rita Goldner, Kitty Shannon,
Bud Olson, Bil Canfield and Nancy Taylor.

Bright Day

8" x 10" Oil on canvas board

Geez, this was done at the end of a long painting
session, and I didn't have it in me to really
SEE anything other than the saguaros!
So saying, the color is kind of interesting,
and this study could be jump off for
simplified landscapes?

Boojum Tree

१२" x१२" oil on canvas

Painted at the Desert Botanical Gardens today in Phoenix AZ.
This is the founder's original home from 1939, Gertrude Divine Webster.

Her dream was, “First, we wish to conserve our Arizona flora
—fast being destroyed.
Second, we wish to establish plantings for students and botanists,
and third, we wish to make a compelling attraction.”

The boojum tree was planted in the first year. The boojum is taken
from
Lewis Carroll's poem "The Hunting of the Snark".

Jazz Hands

6" x 6" Oil on MDF board

$99. + S/H

The model was doing short poses and her hands were flailing a bit,
as she was trying to figure out what to do with them, and she finally
decided to just leave them in midair! It was funny as she accented
that pose, realizing it was OK to just LEAVE them.
I loved the opposite lighting on both sides,
with hands opposite as well.

Solo Saguaro

12" x 12" Oil on canvas

We set up first thing in the morning, before the sun
had come over the mountain. By the time it did come, a nice
shadow hit the cactus.
