Pond Reflection - #81313 by Candy Barr

 8 x 10 Inches Oil on canvas

This was demo for my Plein Air Workshop that started today.
We had to begin indoors due to the heavy rain, and were lucky enough
after lunch to be able to paint outside

 on location

How many plein air painters do you see with a Julian Easel strapped
to their BMW motorcycle?  And Jim arrived in the rain coming from
1 hour away in Calais!

Almost as good as George Coll in Colorado
traveling to his painting sites with his two pack llamas hauling his gear!

Willow at Wadsworth Pond - #82811

6 x 6 inches Oil on Birch Ply

Here's pond across the street from where I live with Prickly Mountain in backdrop. I planted this willow tree in 1979 thinking it would have long tassels to swing on like the willow I grew up with. Not. Guess I didn't read the label carefully at the nursery about what KIND of willow this was going to be. Hmmm. Lots of different willows it turns out. Kind of a major disappointment, but it has a good presence anyway.

My plein air class happily painting away. We're in the storm path today with heavy rain and wind all day.

Birches Prickly Mountain

8 x 8 inches Oil on hardboard

Process

It was cold this week, and we had 4 inches of snow on Monday. And there is still snow in some patches.

On September 3, 1882 Van Gogh, while in Hague, wrote to Theo, in which he described his approach to painting.

In a way I am glad that I never learned painting. In all probability I would then have learned to ignore such effects as this. Now I can say to myself, this is just what I want. If it is impossible, it is impossible, but I'm going to try it even though I don't know how it ought to be done. I don't know myself how I paint it, I just sit down with a white board in front of the spot that appeals to me, I look at what is in front of my eyes, and I say to myself: that white board has got to turn into something - I come back, dissatisfied, I lay it to one side and when I have rested a little, I go and look at it with a kind of awe. Then I am still dissatisfied, because I have that splendid scenery too much in my mind to be satisfied with what I made of it. Yet I can see in my work an echo of what appealed to me, I can see that the scenery has told me something, has spoken to me, and that I have taken it down in shorthand. My shorthand may contain words that cannot be deciphered, mistakes or gaps, and yet there is something left of what the wood or the beach or the figure has told me, and it isn't in tame or conventional language derived from a studied manner or from some system, but from nature itself. Wadsworth Pond

8 x 10 inches Oil on hardboard

Officially this is Wadsworth Pond, but because it's at Prickly Mountain, it's usually called Prickly Pond. I planted the willow tree 20 years ago, thinking it would have long willows to swing on, like I had growing up. Well, turns out there are many varieties of willow trees, and this one is just a stunted kind. Hmmm, I guess it has a distinctive shape nevertheless, just not as functional as I was hoping for.

Pierre and Mary Moffroid's Garden ~Final

9" x 12" Oil on canvas

Completed version
The rain made me halt where I was in
the post yesterday. I thought it needed more
sharp edges and pronounced contrast
between the shadows and highlights.
