There were some color adjustments I finally got around to making from this June 28 post when I was in Maine. As the sun burned through the overcast morning, the colors were getting brighter.

The fish are kept below the water in the floating boxes on the side.
I really enjoyed the shapes of everything and getting the perspective.

The morning started off completely fogged in and grey with little visibility... kind of neat. And then as the sun came up it burned off the fog. You can see the island better as the morning wore on...I couldn't even see it initially! And it was chilly and damp enough that I had a down vest and foul weather jacket on top. Layers that can peel.

Continuation of gray studies with Colin Page from last week. I found these outdoor value studies to be a really good reminder of priorities when challenged by plein air and changing light (or movement as well in case of water and boats!~)

Here are two stages of 20 minute study in values using greys mixed with black paint and white.
We used flat #8 brushes to get our block in. Later at studio I used a smaller brush ...!

two rowboats could be on any beach anywhere.
This one was done a few years ago, and I'm pulling out any boat paintings.

Camden Harbor

I nearly kept driving by, but realized I
needed to turn around and paint the harbor
with the available light. The shadow is foreground
was moving over quickly the park in front
of the town library with this great view of
the boats in the harbor in Camden, Maine.

Bowsprit ~ Happy 4th of July

I had painted this bowsprit plein air, with a different
background. It was too bland for the ship,
so I made up the dramatic sky to compliment
the shape of the bowsprit.

The ropes need some more deltail and highlight.
The horizon line is uneven too..yikes.
