Pigeon Man - #3414 by Candy Barr
8 x 10 inches Oil on panel
This was one of two paintings I did for the Chocolate Festival
Plein Air Event in Glendale, AZ this February.
While I was painting it, a good artist
friend of mine spotted me painting! She was visiting AZ from VERMONT!
Janet Fredericks...and her husband, Jungian psychologist and magician,
It was so unbelievable in a crowd of thousands to
randomly connect with a neighbor and good friend~!

Fire Station #1 Casa Grande - #22814 by Candy Barr
16 x 20 inches Oil on canvas
Last weekend there was an all day Casa Grande Plein Air Event.
Over 50 artists participated with 3 winners. The Captain at the fire station wanted my
painting if it didn't go for the purchase awards.. so there it proudly hangs!
Love chatting with the firemen in between their outings all day. They are such pillars of our communities.
So many coming and goings, and cases of mental illness emergencies rather than
fires if you know much about what too many of their calls are for.

Twenty five years ago false alarms were half the number of fires, today false alarms significantly exceed the number of fires.
According to Nightline it costs $3,500
every time a fire truck pulls out of a fire station in Washington, DC
(25 calls in a 24 hour shift is not uncommon so this adds up
quickly). Moreover, most of the time the call is not for a fire but
for a minor medical problem. In many cities, both fire trucks and
ambulances respond to the same calls. The paramedics do a great job but
it is hard to believe that this is an efficient way to deliver medical
care and transportation. A few locales have experimented with more
rational systems. For example:

On Top of Mt Mansfield ~ tallest peak in Vermont

OK this is from summer during a plein air event at Mt Mansfield with the art exhibition later that day for the paintings done at Stowe Golf Course on Mt Mansfield or at the top of the mountain. We were shuttled up with box lunches. It was a lovely day.
This painting has been sold but I would be happy to do another one up on the mountain for you!

Plein Air competition

What a charming front elevation in this historic district. The house was built in the 1920's
and the 2nd owner is now living there who bought the painting from me.

Process standing across the street beginning at 9 am
Lou walking her dog Orleana (rescue dog from Katrina) came by early in the process and suggested I leave out the gate which was a super idea to help the center of focus become more adamant. ~ thanks Lou for your support along the process! It was a pleasure chatting with you.

Landscape/Cityscape Purchase Award

The city of Glendale AZ had a plein air competition on Saturday and I did two paintings before we turned them in at 3pm. My larger painting with the horse won Landscape/Cityscape Purchase Award. I did it a few blocks from downtown in the historic residential section. The hanging boughs on the top left are from a historic large Eucalyptus tree with a plaque labeling it the Elephant Tree. Years ago when the circus came to town, 2 elephants evidently got LOOSE and were finally found under this tree! It's quite famous as a landmark now.
Award categories are Purchase Awards and will be accessioned into the City of Glendale’s permanent collection upon completion of event:
Best of Show Purchase Award (1) $1000.00 Best of Show award will be presented.
Glendale Centennial Celebration Purchase Awards. Two (2)$500.00 awards will be presented
Glendale Chocolate Affair Purchase Award. One (1) $500.00 award will be presented.
Landscape/Cityscape Purchase Award. One (1) $500.00 award will be presented.
Modern Glendale Purchase Award. One (1) $500.00 award will be presented.
Honorable Mention Purchase Awards. Two (2) $250.00 awards will be presented.
