Process

It was cold this week, and we had 4 inches of snow on Monday. And there is still snow in some patches.

On September 3, 1882 Van Gogh, while in Hague, wrote to Theo, in which he described his approach to painting.

In a way I am glad that I never learned painting. In all probability I would then have learned to ignore such effects as this. Now I can say to myself, this is just what I want. If it is impossible, it is impossible, but I'm going to try it even though I don't know how it ought to be done. I don't know myself how I paint it, I just sit down with a white board in front of the spot that appeals to me, I look at what is in front of my eyes, and I say to myself: that white board has got to turn into something - I come back, dissatisfied, I lay it to one side and when I have rested a little, I go and look at it with a kind of awe. Then I am still dissatisfied, because I have that splendid scenery too much in my mind to be satisfied with what I made of it. Yet I can see in my work an echo of what appealed to me, I can see that the scenery has told me something, has spoken to me, and that I have taken it down in shorthand. My shorthand may contain words that cannot be deciphered, mistakes or gaps, and yet there is something left of what the wood or the beach or the figure has told me, and it isn't in tame or conventional language derived from a studied manner or from some system, but from nature itself. [….]

Process

The neutral colored sanded paper I rubbed entirely with a soft orange pastel to cover the entire page.

Vermont Autumn Farm

The location of my final plein air class today. Demo above showing back light coming through maple trees and on the willows. The sun was intermittent as it rained lightly for 10 minutes.
It was in low 50's today so we all had coats on and gloves.
I admit it ~ it was penetrating cold by 6 pm when we were done. You never know with Vermont fall foliage what the temperature will be. The colors are going to be great this year as they are turning slowly and sustaining their color.

And on to preparing wood panels

Blazing Maple

These maple trees by the dirt road are just down the road
from me, and compliment the mountains this time of year!
It is such a nice contrast to the upcoming quietness of winter.

Fall Field (final)

This is slightly changed from original post on
October 15. I didn't get a photo of it the day
I stood there, and next day the field was mowed.
It's stunning to see the changes with the seasons.
It looks like a lawn now.

Spruce Mountain from Marshfield VT

16" x 16" Oil - SOLD

This was started last weekend (after a dedication
of the land to the town), but the
fantastic sky kept changing and I was distacted
by its drama. I guess that's why value studies
are a good idea, to set the stage. I did take some
photos and will follow up with this painting. It feels like
only the shapes were really put in and not much of the form.

This site is newly acquired in the Vermont Land Trust
for the Town of Marshfield, Vermont. Susan Abbott a wonderful artist, organized
a paint out to raise funds to complete
the purchase for a January 2008 auction.

Not sure this doesn't need more clarification
in tree shapes . It was stunning day.

Knoll Farm

Knoll Farm is a working family farm of hardwood forests and hillside meadows overlooking the Green Mountains in the Mad River Valley of Vermont. Their land and buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places, and conserved by the Vermont Land Trust. They are the base for Center for Whole Communities, a learning and retreat center for activists that was founded by the owners of the farm, Peter Forbes and Helen Whybrow.
(Helen was most gracious allowing me to paint with my friend unannounced,
to which I am most grateful)

Temps in the forties, so wearing gloves, hat and coat.
Plein air not for the weak.
The colors are outrageous this week though.
When the sun is out in the morning, you feel as
though you're driving through a cathedral.
