Here was the start
The Arizona Plein Air Painters had a paint out today at the Farmers Market in Mesa and a few of us set up at the intersection of Main & McDonald. It was busy all morning until the end at 2pm. What fun to see the families, couples, and friends shopping together for lovely fresh produce.

Washington DC Capitol with Cherry Blossoms
11 x 14 inches Oil on canvas SOLD
Starting out
It turns out that dealing with symmetry and the uniformity of multiple windows and columns requires a certain amount of dedication and concentration... yikes. I don't really do it very well because I'm not an architectural draftsman, but I did want this to be more than a casual rendering with oil paint.
I have one more of the Capitol to go where I'll try loosen up with color and brush work!

Plein Air competition
What a charming front elevation in this historic district. The house was built in the 1920's
and the 2nd owner is now living there who bought the painting from me.
Process standing across the street beginning at 9 am
Lou walking her dog Orleana (rescue dog from Katrina) came by early in the process and suggested I leave out the gate which was a super idea to help the center of focus become more adamant. ~ thanks Lou for your support along the process! It was a pleasure chatting with you.

Landscape/Cityscape Purchase Award
The city of Glendale AZ had a plein air competition on Saturday and I did two paintings before we turned them in at 3pm. My larger painting with the horse won Landscape/Cityscape Purchase Award. I did it a few blocks from downtown in the historic residential section. The hanging boughs on the top left are from a historic large Eucalyptus tree with a plaque labeling it the Elephant Tree. Years ago when the circus came to town, 2 elephants evidently got LOOSE and were finally found under this tree! It's quite famous as a landmark now.
Award categories are Purchase Awards and will be accessioned into the City of Glendale’s permanent collection upon completion of event:
Best of Show Purchase Award (1) $1000.00 Best of Show award will be presented.
Glendale Centennial Celebration Purchase Awards. Two (2)$500.00 awards will be presented
Glendale Chocolate Affair Purchase Award. One (1) $500.00 award will be presented.
Landscape/Cityscape Purchase Award. One (1) $500.00 award will be presented.
Modern Glendale Purchase Award. One (1) $500.00 award will be presented.
