Morning Grand Canyon #3613 by Candy Barr

24 x 24 inches Oil on Canvas  SOLD

This was done on location, beginning at sunrise with the early morning light and shadows still coming into canyon.   Previously posted, but I thought it related to yesterday's post of the desert wash with the deep morning shadows.
Painting on site at the Grand Canyon is extraodinary.. so much to see and get lost in...magnificence the scale....

8 x 10 inches Oil on canvas board SOLD

Earlier version... I needed to straighten out the sky and darken the foreground...

Washington DC Capitol

8 x 10 inches Oil on Canvas SOLD

in process with dome too tall, before I took it down

Does working outside with a photograph constitute plein air?

I dunno, a commission that was better done outdoors than in my studio.

Saguaro with Four Peaks

8 x 10 inches Oil on canvas board

A little plein air going on after sunrise. It started out pretty dark and 48 degrees but no wind.
never really took off any clothing layers, as it was overcast most of the morning.
Outrageously peaceful and wonderful to be in Tonto State Park with the only concern being what am trying to convey in my painting? After coming home, it occurs to me after it dries, that I might clean up a saguaro or two, as the wet on wet can get tricky. I can see how a studio version of this would allow me to glaze on the sky and feather the colors more before adding the foreground...perhaps this would have some merit.
At times I felt as if I were channeling Marsden Hartley ...apologizes to MH fans. It does wing you up through the process spontaneously.

Canyon Shadow

10" x 10" Oil on masonite

$125 + S/H

This was from sunrise at Bulldog Canyon
and I enjoyed the freshness of the brush quality
and range of blues and decided to not work into it
more and possibly deaden it.

Grand Canyon AM-process

IN process 24" x 24" Oil sold
Not quite complete. Desert View Point on east end of west rim and really challenging in plein air to get it all down at once this size. Needs some work.

The memory of painting here from sunrise with a picnic and birds soaring and coming by for some grapes was pretty exceptional though.

Hay Pile

Hay Pile
- 6" x 6" oil on panel
early morning paddock $50.

Tomorrow I'll be painting on a 4 day plein air retreat to Sedona, the Grand Canyon & Flagstaff, AZ with another artist friend, Diane.

It's been
in the 90's in Scottsdale, and should be cooler in the mountains.
