Glorious morning with glistening sparkles from sunshine after days of drizzly rain. You can see the drag marks in the sand of my easel due to the encroaching tide coming in. Must be mindful of which way it's going!

Here's 8" iconic Basin Harbor Adirondack Chair painted up for the Vermont Arts Council art auction at the Basin Harbor Club in Basin Harbor Vermont. Their annual “Reflections on Basin Harbor” show runs for 10 days before Labor Day each year, August 10 - 20 this year. They invited previous artists of the show to participate...and what better way than suggest the view when lounging?

This is the 500 painting I've posted on this blog,
and it's been a real pleasure meandering
through various subjects.

Figures, portraits including
of Obama from the inauguration, nude
models (some of which stirred up
censorship issues)
landscapes in the Southwest to oceans
and vernal pools in Maine. Vermont
rivers and vistas, mostly plein air along the way.

I haven't been too selective about themes,
but maybe the next 500 will.
I have appreciated all the supportive
comments along the way,
and the patrons who have purchased
my work: THANK YOU~~!

Waves I

Made it to MAINE, with an overnight in York
en route staying with roommate Martha from RISD,
and her husband Jay, MFA Ceramics at RISD.

It's been misty and overcast since we arrived, with
some rain here and there as well. Beautiful to take walks
on the beach, but one early morning outing to a private
lobster dock caught me in the rain.
I moved off dock to above with view
looking down on the dories instead,
protected under pineboughs and a small
umbrella rigged to another easel. Even I
felt the occasion was arduous. I was looking
through oak brances at boats, but for a small
canvas it was too busy, and I wiped it out before
returning. How do you like that?
I usually save
ones overburdened, just to see the what not to do,
or appreciate the good spots, or who knows what else
might reveal itself? In this case, the wetness of the
experience overall was not memorable. Oh, I hadn't
brought my slicker, so I just had some cotton layers
on, not so protective of dampness.
So painting the surf on overcast day above nestled next
to large rock cliffs was a pleasure.

My camera is still in the shop, so I am continuing to
post older works. At an August art sale in Maine a couple of years
ago, some parents offered their thirteen year old son a choice
of any painting to commemorate his successful completion
of sailing camp!
He selected this painting as his memento of his summer
and I couldn't have been more pleased.
Nice way to start a youngster as an art collector no?

Moonlight

Occasionally situations require some photo assistance.
I'm pretty ambiguous on the "ethics" of this.
My latest business card I omitted Plein Air before
Artist...I guess you do what you have to do.
But there certainly is NO substitute for painting
on location. Squinting at a photograph, doesn't get you
the same results. And with the larger studio pieces I
am doing recently, I have the plein air painting
as well as having a monitor with the photograph
on it next to my easel. Life is modern.

Once again yearly painting retreat in Small Point, Maine
with five other artists for two weeks.
This is such a wonderful contrast to the desert in Arizona!
We take turns cooking beautiful dinners and enjoy the ocean.

We've also exhibited together at O'Farrell's Gallery
when it was in Brunswick, the Eastland Gallery (now Aucosico)
in Portland, and Studio Place Arts in Barre, Vermont.
